Keep the Holidays Happy

Estacada Fire District had a fatal fire last week in a motor home. Although the fire cause was not positively identified, the point of origin was, and a space heater could not be ruled out as the fire cause.
I would like to take this opportunity to stress to all our citizens the importance of making sure portable heaters are used properly. Clearances to combustibles and tip over safety switches, as well as UL (Underwriters Laboratory) tested and approved appliances are essential fire prevention measures that need to be adhered to. Working smoke detectors and home fire escape planning and practice should also be included in your personal home prevention activities. Extension cords should be used with caution, and never ran under carpet or used to replace permanent wiring. If you heat with wood, check your chimney, if it needs cleaned, your fire department loans brushes and poles- free of any charge.
